Uric acid is a chemical produced when your body breaks down food that contain organic compounds called purines. Uric acid is usually filtered out by the kidneys and passes out of the body in urine. Small amount is passed out of the body in stool. If too much uric acid is being produced or if the kidneys are not able to remove it from the blood normally, the level of uric acid in the blood increases. High levels of uric acid in the blood can lead to the formation of solid crystals within the joints which causes a painful condition called gout. Gout is a type of arthritis which is caused by deposits of urate crystals in the joints which leads to swelling and restricted movement of affected joints. Moreover if gout is not treated these uric acid crystals can build up in the joints and nearby tissues. Very high levels of uric acid also indicates a variety of conditions including diabetes, bone marrow disorders such as leukemia and kidney disorders or kidney stones. Here are few precautions to control uric acid:
- LOSE SOME WEIGHT:
Try to reduce your weight using a healthy balanced diet because if you are overweight you are at high risk of developing gout. Do brisk walk for 20-30 minutes.
- AVOID HIGH PURINE FOODS:
Heavy meals which contain lots of fat and purines should be avoided such as meat or meat extracts.
- REDUCE ALCOHOL INTAKE:
Alcohol particularly beer is high in purines so avoid all alcohol or restrict drinking.
- DRINK MORE WATER:
Drink more water as it helps kidneys to excrete urates.
- TRY TO AVOID CAFFEINATED DRINKS:
Caffeine increases purine production which contributes to increased uric acid in the blood.
- FOODS HIGH IN SODIUM:
Eat a diet low in sodium and processed foods.
